All About Birth Control Pills

by Whitney Rhodes on January 23, 2010

Birth control pills revolutionized birth control when they were first introduced back in 1960. Women could control their own reproductive cycles for the first time in history!

If you are considering taking birth control pills to avoid getting pregnant, you might be wondering about how they work, any side effects they might have, the different types of birth control pills available, and whether or not they will permanently affect your fertility.

Here are some brief facts about birth control pills:

How do Birth Control Pills Work?

Birth control pills work by combining two hormones—estrogen and progesterone—that inhibit ovulation. If you do not ovulate, you do not release an egg for a sperm to fertilize, thus you do not become pregnant.

What Types of Birth Control Pills are There?

Basically, there are two types of birth control pills:

  1. Combination Pills
  2. Emergency Contraceptive Pills

Combination birth control pills contain several sub-groups, but basically they all work by hormonal contraception.

The emergency birth control pill, also known as the “Morning After” pill, uses a form of progestin called levonorgestrel to prevent ovulation. Contrary to popular opinion, this pill will not terminate a pregnancy that already exists.

These emergency birth control pills are available over the counter to females 18 years old or older.

What Are the Side Effects of Birth Control Pills?

The most common side effects of birth control pills are:

  • Acne
  • Swollen, tender breasts
  • Breakthrough bleeding and spotting between menstrual cycles
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Changes in eyes that make wearing contact lenses difficult
  • Bloating
  • Headaches
  • Changes in libido

It is important to note that not everyone will experience these side effects. Some women have all of the side effects, some have just a few, and some have none.

Can Birth Control Pills Make You Permanently Infertile?

No. 90% of women will conceive within a year of going off the pill.

Birth control pills have been a blessing for millions of women all over the world since they came into being. Many women feel that the pill is the easiest, most convenient method of birth control available.
