Male infertility accounts for approximately 40% of the 2 million infertile couples in the United States.
Many men who are experiencing male infertility opt for alternative treatments as opposed to traditional treatments.
Alternative medicine of all kinds has many supporters, and many men who have been diagnosed with male infertility have been able to reverse their infertility using alternative and naturopathic treatments.
Here are some of the alternative treatments available for male infertility:
Naturopathic Treatment
Naturopathic treatment for male infertility mainly focuses on improving the quality, quantity and overall health of the male sperm.
Research has shown that sperm counts have dropped by almost 50% since the 1940s. While some in the scientific and medical communities question or even dispute these findings and believe that the decline is not as severe as reported, the fact is that sperm counts are definitely declining.
It is generally believed that the drop in male sperm counts in the United States is due to environmental causes such as exposure to toxic materials, and lifestyle habits including diet.
There is no doubt that making healthy lifestyle choices and eating a nutritious, well balanced diet can help in the production of healthy sperm.
Along with good, healthy nutrition and lifestyle choices such as not smoking or using drugs or alcohol, alternative treatments for male infertility might include the taking of various dietary supplements such as:
- Arginine: 4 gr daily. Arginine is needed to produce sperm. If the sperm count is below 10 million per ml, then arginine will probably not be helpful
- Coenzyme Q10: 10 mg daily to increase sperm count as well as motility.
- Flaxseed oil: 1 tbsp daily as a good source of essential fatty acids.
- L-carnitine: 3-4 grams daily. A requirement for normal sperm function.
- Multivitamin: 1 daily of any high quality vitamin with minerals.
- Selenium: 200 mcg daily. This one improves sperm motility.
- Vitamin B12: 1000 mcg daily. Men with a Vitamin B12 deficiency have reduced sperm motility and sperm count. Even if there is no deficiency, a supplement might help men with a sperm count of less than 20 million per milliliter or a motility rate of less than 50%.
- Vitamin C: 500 mg twice a day.
- Vitamin E: 400 IUs 2 times daily. Vitamin E is an antioxidant and improves sperms’ ability to impregnate, also.
- Zinc: 30 mg 2 times daily. Zinc is necessary for a healthy male reproductive system and sperm production.
Even if there is no issue with male infertility, if a couple is trying to conceive, any of these naturopathic and lifestyle choices would be tremendously beneficial!

Great post, I’ve linked it on my blog. I’d love to hear your take on some of the other treatments available out there, like waht a TCM practitioner or acupuncturist might prescribe…
Thanks, Tony! Not sure about acupuncture for male infertility, must do some research on the subject.
