If you are trying to get pregnant, you have probably heard all sorts of axioms pertaining to conception.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t pay to accept all you hear as the literal truth.
To do so could cause problems for you in getting pregnant!
Here are some of the most common myths about conception, along with the truths that dispute them:
Myth: You will get pregnant if you have sex exactly 14 days after you have your menstrual period.
Truth: Not necessarily. This myth was built on the old calendar method of tracking ovulation which depended on every woman having a 28 day cycle. The thing is that many or even most women do not have a textbook 28 day cycle, so having sex exactly 14 days after your menstrual period does not mean that is the day when you are ovulating.
Myth: If you have sex often, you will get pregnant faster.
Truth: Although there is a smidgen of truth to that myth, insofar that studies have shown that couples who have intercourse approximately 4-5 times a week usually conceive within a year, it isn’t a done deal. If you have sex 3 times a day except around the date that you are ovulating, you will be hurting your chances of getting pregnant.
Myth: If you have been pregnant once, you won’t have any issues with infertility.
Truth: Wrong. Secondary infertility is the term used for people who have conceived once but are subsequently infertile. Based on a government study done in 1995, approximately 3.3 million American couples experience secondary infertility every year in the United States.
Myth: If you haven’t used a hormonal contraceptive, you should get pregnant immediately, as soon as you stop using any type of birth control.
Truth: Nope. Hormonal contraceptives affect your hormones, but hormones alone don’t make your fertile or infertile. If you or your partner has some other medical reason for infertility, such as blocked fallopian tubes in women or varicocele in men—not taking a hormonal contraceptive won’t really be a factor when you start trying to get pregnant.
While it is important to realize that approximately 9 out of 10 couples have no problems whatsoever with conception, separating the fact from the fiction about getting pregnant can put you ahead of the game!
