There may come a time for an infertile couple to consider the possibility of egg donation.
What is Egg Donation?
Egg donation is exactly what it sounds like: A woman receives donor eggs that are then inseminated with sperm in order to become pregnant.
There are those who would argue that egg donation is unethical, but this is basically utter nonsense. Egg donation makes perfect sense for many women who would otherwise be childless.
One of the advantages of egg donation is that sperm from the husband might be used for in vitro fertilization.
Research has conclusively shown that there is the same nurturing instinct and bonding with a baby born to a women from donated eggs as a baby born from a woman’s own eggs.
Why Would You Need an Egg Donation?
In some cases, the woman may simply have passed the age where she still has eggs. In other words, even a post menopausal woman can still become pregnant and give birth with donated eggs.
In other cases, there may have been surgery that necessitated removing a woman’s ovaries so that she no longer has eggs, but with a normal uterus she can still be pregnant and give birth to a baby.
Women as old as 63 have become pregnant with donor eggs and given birth!
Remember, it is the age of the eggs, not the age of the woman, that makes all the difference. So, theoretically, a healthy woman of any age could carry and deliver a perfectly normal baby if she received donor eggs from a young woman.
Fascinating, isn’t it?
The first pregnancy that used an embryo from donated eggs was in Australia back in 1983. The medical world—indeed the entire world—was astounded at such a thing!
In quite a few cases, a woman may have a friend or family member who is happy to donate eggs.
On the technical side of things, the monthly cycle of the donor and the mother-to-be are synchronized with medications before egg donation. In addition, the recipient of the donated eggs must be given hormones that will stimulate her uterus to prepare its lining for the embryo in order for implantation to take place.
If you have a healthy uterus, but no eggs, egg donation offers a wonderful, workable way for you to have a baby!
