If you are trying to conceive, you don’t want irregular menstrual periods.
Here are 5 possible causes of irregular menstrual periods:
1. Being underweight: If you are too thin, without the amount of body fat you should have, it can cause you to have irregular menstrual periods—or even cause you to stop having a period altogether. You need the recommended 15% of body fat in order for your body to manufacture the hormones it needs for regular menstruation. Losing these healthy hormones also causes dry skin, hair loss, loss of bone density and other problems. So, if you are trying to get pregnant or plan on trying to conceive soon, you should get your body weight up to what it should be!
2. Alcohol: If you are trying to get pregnant, it is best to leave off alcohol. Studies have shown that drinking more than 5 alcoholic drinks a week can cause reduced ovulation and decreased fertility. For safety’s sake, it would be best to avoid alcohol altogether while you are trying to get pregnant and after you become pregnant, also.
3. Oral steroids such as those frequently given for allergies are one of the leading culprits when it comes to irregular menstrual periods. Prednisone is one such steroid that has been shown to cause missed periods.
4. Smoking can cause irregular menstrual periods. In fact, research shows that some of the toxins in cigarettes affect your ovaries and circulatory system. Women who smoke enter menopause an average of two years earlier than non-smokers. So, if you are trying to conceive, give up smoking.
5. Some environmental toxins can disrupt a woman’s hormonal balance, which in turn can lead to irregular menstrual periods. Heavy metals, in particular, can cause changes in menstrual periods. Limit your exposure to heavy metals such as lead when you are trying to conceive and after you become pregnant, as well.
Knowing some of the reasons why you might be having irregular menstrual periods can help you to avoid the things that could cause this. If you are having irregular periods, be sure and talk to your doctor about it so that appropriate testing can be done, if necessary, to get your periods back on track!
