Relaxation Techniques to Reduce Stress When You are Trying to Conceive

If you are trying to conceive and it seems to be taking too long, have you considered trying relaxation techniques to reduce stress?

For a while, the medical world discarded the old notion that stress plays a part in infertility, but recent studies have shown evidence to the contrary, and it is now believed by many in the medical and scientific community that stress does indeed play a key role in the ability or inability to conceive.

So, look at it this way: If there is no truth to the belief that stress plays a role in infertility and you practice relaxation techniques to reduce stress, it certainly isn’t going to harm you.

On the other hand, if it does turn out to be the truth and stress really does play a major role in infertility, then you have covered your bets!

Here are some safe relaxation techniques that you might like to try:

  • Autogenic Relaxation: Autogenic relaxation simply means that it originates within you. So, to use this de-stressing technique, you use a combination of body awareness and visual imagery to aid in relaxation. You repeat words or phrases in your mind that help you relax, while you relax your muscles and slow your breathing.
  • Visualization: This relaxation technique works much the same as Autogenic Relaxation in that you picture yourself in some blissful, relaxed setting. For example, you might picture yourself on a sun kissed beach, lying on the warm sand and listening to the rhythmic sounds of the ocean waves….and while doing this; you consciously relax your muscles and focus on slow, controlled breathing.

Other recommended relaxation techniques include:

  • Yoga
  • Tai chi
  • Listening to music
  • Exercise
  • Meditation
  • Hypnosis
  • Massage

According to the Mayo Clinic, practicing relaxation techniques can reduce stress symptoms by:

  • Slowing your heart rate
  • Lowering blood pressure
  • Slowing your breathing rate
  • Increasing blood flow to major muscles
  • Reducing muscle tension and chronic pain
  • Improving concentration
  • Reducing anger and frustration
  • Boosting confidence to handle problems

Relaxation techniques are good for anybody, and if you are trying to get pregnant, they just might help you get there a little faster!
