If you don’t want to get pregnant just yet, you may be interested to know that there is a new research project being conducted in the United States that will be effective birth control for men.
One of the best things about this new male contraceptive is that although it will have long term effectiveness—up to six months according to researchers—it is reversible so that when the time is right and a couple is ready to start a family they can go ahead and conceive.
According to a recent press release from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, ultrasound may soon be a long term, reversible male contraceptive.
University researchers at UNC have been awarded a $100,000 Grand Challenges Exploration Grant to develop this innovative new contraceptive.
For many years, medical research has tried to find and develop a feasible male contraceptive.
This may be it!
The new male contraceptive method uses therapeutic ultrasound instruments to deplete testicular sperm. When the testis have stopped manufacturing sperm and the sperm reserves in the testis have been completely eradicated, it will be impossible for a man to father a child.
Researchers at UNC believe that this ultrasound method of male contraception will last up to six months.
This global health research project is being conducted by James Tsuruta, PhD, and Paul Dayton, PhD, titled “Ultrasound as a Long-Term, Reversible Contraceptive.”
“Our long-term goal is to use ultrasound from therapeutic instruments that are commonly found in sports medicine or physical therapy clinics as an inexpensive, long-term, reversible male contraceptive suitable for use in developing to first world countries,” said Tsuruta.
“We think this could provide men with up to six months of reliable, low-cost, non-hormonal contraception from a single round of treatment,” Tsuruta said.
If this research succeeds in developing a reliable, fast, easy and inexpensive male contraceptive, it will be a ground breaking success in the world of birth control.
The whole world was changed when “The Pill” made its appearance for female birth control back in 1960! Suddenly, millions of women all around the world were free to have sexual relations without the fear of pregnancy.
Now, we may soon have reliable birth control for men!
