If you are trying to get pregnant, using fertility awareness methods can help you conceive up to six times faster, and knowing what the signs of ovulation are is the first step!
What is Fertility Awareness?
Fertility Awareness refers to the natural methods that may be used to either help get pregnant, or prevent pregnancy from occurring. It is based on observing, recording and tracking the natural signs that your body provides to signal when you are at your most fertile.
Ovulation is key to conception!
What is Ovulation?
Ovulation is what takes place when your ovary releases a viable, mature egg, known as an ovum. Prior to ovulation and being released from your ovary, the egg is immature and is inside an ovarian follicle.
Here are some prominent signs of ovulation:
- There will be a rise in your Basal Body Temperature. Your Basal Body Temperature, or BBT, is the temperature of your body when it is completely at rest. When you ovulate, your BBT will increase by a few tenths of a degree, and stay slightly elevated for a couple of days. If your Basal Body Temperature remains slightly elevated for ten days or so after ovulation, it is time to buy a home pregnancy test!
- There will be changes in the position of your cervix. When ovulation occurs, your cervix will morph to being higher, softer and more open. Yes, it does sound rather icky to test for this manually, but if you want to take charge of your own fertility—it needs to be done.
- Just as there are changes in cervical position, there will also be changes to cervical mucous. Again, this is something you will simply have to get used to checking! When you are at your most fertile, your cervical mucous will change. It will go from being sticky, creamy or nonexistent to the consistency of raw egg whites and will “string” or stretch between your fingers. If it seems gross, just consider the benefit—a baby!
These are the three most common signs of ovulation, and are an integral part of fertility awareness!
