How to Get Pregnant After Tubal Ligation

by Laura Mercer on June 13, 2010

If you want to get pregnant but have had tubal ligation, the situation is far from hopeless.

Sometimes women get their tubes tied, and then changes in their lives mean that they regret this action and want to have a baby.

There are basically two ways to go if you have had your tubes tied and want to get pregnant:

  • Tubal Ligation Reversal
  • In Vitro Fertilization

Either one of these procedures is feasible with a good chance of success so that you can go ahead and conceive. Which method you choose will be determined by your own particular circumstances and preferences.

If you opt for tubal ligation reversal surgery, here are some things you might be interested to know:

This type of surgery usually requires a laparotomy which is done through an incision on the abdomen, approximately 4 to 6 inches in length in most cases. The skin, muscles and other tissues of the abdominal wall have to be cut through, so there is considerably more discomfort and a much longer recovery time following tubal ligation reversal surgery than that of laparoscopic surgery for a tubal ligation.

Although there are a few surgeons doing tubal ligation reversal surgery through laparoscopy, but this is still basically a new thing and there are no rates yet as to success in reversing the tubal ligation when the surgery is done this way.

You can usually count on being in the hospital for approximately 3 days after you have the surgery. Most doctors will recommend staying off work for about 2-3 weeks post op.

There are 5 vital factors that should be taken into consideration before having tubal ligation reversal surgery:

  • Female age
  • Tubal status
  • Reproductive health
  • Quantity and quality of eggs
  • Sperm quality of male partner

If you choose to go the IVF route, the doctor will retrieve some of your eggs, fertilize them with your partner’s sperm, and then transfer the fertilized eggs directly to your womb with the hopes that at least one will implant.

Just as a vasectomy doesn’t always have to be permanent for men, tubal ligation can often be reversed in women who want to get pregnant!
